Non Profit Start-up: Rural Health Factor
Rural Health Factor - Non-Profit Start-Up
Mason, Alabama
About Mason:
Mason is a nursing student at the University of Alabama advocating for the improvement of rural healthcare.
About Rural Health Factor:
Rural America experiences a severe healthcare deficit. In Alabama, hospitals are very spread out. In the event of an emergency, it’s often life or death. Rural hospitals are not prepared to care for COVID-19 patients.
Mason's initiative of the Rural Health Factor will inspire, advocate for and improve the future of rural healthcare through scholarship, legislation and education. It uses its online presence to promote healthier lifestyles, providing information on heart disease, diabetes and wellness.
What was your inspiration behind the project?
Mason: "Growing up in a small town with limited healthcare options, I found myself with a limited scope of what healthcare is. The field is ever growing and changing, and I want to use this organization to help other local students see that.
I also drew from experiences with family members and encounters I’ve had when trying to access healthcare in rural Alabama. After seeing the struggle so many rural citizens face when trying to get help and remain healthy, I felt compelled to start making a change!"
What is your message to the community?
Mason: "Change starts with you! Together we can overcome healthcare disparities and create a better tomorrow for the citizens of rural America."
