Packing Light for a Local Getaway

Woman wrapped up in a blanket sitting on a cabin patio in the fall.

Cabin fever got you down? A quick cure is a simple staycation or a short weekend road trip. Doesn’t have to be fancy or financially stressful; it could be as simple as a cabin in the woods or a short-term rental in a nearby city, just to see something with a fresh pair of eyes.

Or you could look into a camping trip at a local campground, a hideaway yurt, or an apartment skyscraper – just something different than whatever your day-to-day routine looks like. It could mean renting a van and going nowhere for a few days. The options are pretty endless, even if you’re staying close to home.

So, we’ve sold you on seeking a change of scenery, but now it’s a question of what to pack without packing too much (or not enough?). We’ve crafted this packing list for those who want to stick to packing light – and packing right – so that your vacation or staycation is a break, not another stressor.

The One-Bag Wonder

If you’re hitting the road for your weekend getaway, you really don’t need everything but the kitchen sink. You should be able to fit the essentials in a bag or two. Overpacking just makes leaving the destination that much more stressful, because what if you forgot something you brought? Let’s avoid that.

Remember the Bare Essentials on Your Packing List

…You know, things like hygiene products, a change of clothes, shoes, etc. You should definitely bring:

  • Clothes (for however long you’ll be gone)
  • Pajamas
  • Shoes + Socks
  • Daily Toiletries
    • Toothbrush/Toothpaste
    • Shampoo/Conditioner
    • Soap
    • Deodorant
  • Medication
  • Wallet
  • Keys
  • Chargers + Cables
  • And of course, your mask, hand sanitizer, and any other PPE or hygiene supplies.

Make Packing Light Easy; Bring One Pair of Shoes

To save room, think about the things that can be used more than once. A water-resistant windbreaker is great for the in-between seasons because it adds a layer while protecting against the elements. Or, pack a pair of pants (joggers or sweatpants) that work for lounging around or spending time on the town.

You’ll also want to think about bulkier items, like shoes. No one likes lugging around multiple pairs. That’s why having a one-shoe-fits-all pair of shoes is a genius move.

That’s where Vessi comes in.

We designed our shoe to eliminate the need for multiple pairs of shoes. They’re 100% waterproof (and easy to clean), making them perfect for any outdoor activity from hiking and biking to boating and everything in between. Plus, they’re slip-resistant, making it so you’re stable on sketchy surfaces. Thanks to top-of-the-line footwear technology, you can say see ya to soaked socks and sore feet!

Lastly, Vessis were designed to be lightweight. They clock in at 6.7 ounces, so even if you’re on your feet all day, it won’t feel like you’re lugging bricks around for feet. Our shoes are meant to take packing light to a whole new level since they add next to nothing to the total weight of your bag.

Don’t Forget the Fun

Someone putting together a puzzle on their staycation

You aren’t leaving one place to do the same thing in another place (like watching TV or sitting on your phone), so pack some stuff for any downtime on your trip. Maybe that’s a book you’ve been wanting to read, a movie you’ve been meaning to watch, a game you and your friends play, a puzzle that’s itching to be put together, etc.

If you’re more of the outdoorsy type, there are an equal amount of things you could bring as well. Think about packing a hammock, a frisbee, an outdoor yard game, a camera for some nature or city shots, or anything, really. You may not even need anything to do outdoors if you’re going somewhere for its natural beauty. It’s about planning and packing smarter, not harder.

And if you’re going out on the town, maybe try a new restaurant, try a new activity, or visit a new area. Activities and restaurants don’t take any space on your packing list, simply your itinerary.

Vessis Are Meant to Be Worn

These shoes aren’t meant to stay in the box or on display; they’re meant to be on your feet and see everything you see – from concrete and gravel to grass, dirt, water, and rocks, be sure your Vessis make it on the packing list

They will cushion and protect your feet when you’re on the go, keep your feet dry, and make it so you’re walking on clouds all day long. Whether you’re a city dweller, an outdoorsy explorer, a frequent flyer, a routine follower, or something else entirely, our shoes will be with you every step of your trip.

Say goodbye to stinky feet, sopping socks, and slipping on wet surfaces, and say hello to Vessi shoes. We’ve got four styles to choose from, starting with our newest Weekend Sneaker, our lightest Cityscape Sneaker, and our staple Everyday Sneaker in either slip-on or standard construction

Now that you have proper footwear and a simple packing list to follow, go enjoy your trip!
