Tell us a little about yourself!
I am a college student that is currently attending the University of Tennessee, Knoxville. I have renamed my school to University of Tennessee, Knoxville at Bethesda, since I am completely classes at home. I am a Deaf education major with a passion for social justice.
I have been writing a ton of letters since coming home. I believe that they are one of the best ways to document the human experience. It is so important that we document this crazy world that we are living in today.
A fun fact about me is that I Irish danced for 13 years! I love a good jig!
Tell us about your #MakeWaves project.
I want to make cloth masks for a homeless shelter in Maryland or D.C. I live right on the Maryland, D.C., Virginia border, so would be happy in working with any of the shelters there. I also am returning to Knoxville, Tennessee mid May and could distribute masks to a homeless shelter there. I believe that this is one of the most vulnerable groups during the pandemic. I would like to sew and provide as many cloth masks that I could so that they could be reused with the same wearer.
I also want to purchase individual hand sanitizer packets that the shelters could distribute throughout their homeless community. I would also purchase gloves if able to get ahold of any. I feel like any supplies that can be given to this community would help protect them.
I have not contacted any homeless shelters yet, but am assuming that this is a need that is critical within their communities. I hope that I would be able to help this community in either the D.C. metro area or Knoxville, Tennessee.
Who inspired you?
The homeless community in either the Washington, D.C. metro region or in Knoxville, Tennessee.
Reading about the struggles that the homeless community face everyday, but especially during this pandemic has really inspired me.
I am so blessed to have a roof over my head and access to cleaning products, that I want to give back to this community.
