Eric Hamber Fashion Sewing Masks For Community

Joanna, Vancouver

Tell us a little about yourself!

I am currently a grade 12 student at Eric Hamber Secondary. I've been a part of my school's fashion design department for 5 years. My passions include traveling, textiles, and marketing. Due to the pandemic, I am unable to attend prom and grad, which is pretty upsetting.

Tell us about your #MakeWaves project.
Every year, the Eric Hamber fashion department hosts an annual fashion show for its design students to showcase their work. The show not only helps students express their creativity but also brings the entire local community together.

However, this year, because of the pandemic we were forced to cancel the show. At a critical time like this, our students decided to shift their focus from using the show as a way to bond the community to using their sewing skills as a way to give back to the community. We are planning to sew masks for the first responders, health care workers, and members of our community.

With the funds we receive, we will be purchasing materials and necessary equipment to assist in this project.

What inspired your project and what impact would you like to make?

We are hoping to help the frontline health care workers as well as those in our community who are unable to obtain or are in dire need of masks. Through this project we also hope to impact our students and empower them to give back to their community more often in the future.

Our mentor and teacher, Ms. Nina Ho is the original inspiration of this project. Ms. Ho has been part of the Eric Hamber fashion department for over 30 years. She is a huge inspiration and influence on all the design students she teaches, and this project was her idea as well. Ms. Ho always aims to motivate students to be the best version of themselves and help out their school and local community as much as possible.

This project is an excellent investment for the future youths of our society. It allows students how to show compassion while mastering a skill, and it helps them realize that there is much more to fashion design and textiles than just sewing. A skill set can change lives, and this is a good example of how it can do so.

Your message to the community:
We're so excited to share our project with you!
